本アイテムで扱う「本朝水滸伝豪傑八百人一個」は「通俗水滸伝」の好評により同版元加賀屋から続いて出版されたもので、題名の示す通り「水滸伝」にあやかって我が国の豪傑を描いた揃物であるが、単なる後続作ではなく、武者絵の画題の上でそれ までの作品とは違った展開の見られる作である。
本朝水滸伝に登場する八百人の義賊（豪傑）と、その中でも特に膳臣巴提使として知られるキャラクターを描いた。膳臣巴提使は、武勇に優れた勇士として描かれ、強靭な体格や力強い表情が特徴。彼が武器を振るったり、虎と戦闘態勢をとったりしている様子が表現、彼の勇気や闘争心が視覚的に強調。
